Roughneck Heavy Duty 15lb Post-Hole Digger is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get's the job done Only got them 2 days ago, but they worked well when I had to dig a 18" square, 3'6" deep hole. Had already got the hole to 2'6" by hand but was struggling to get it deeper. These whistled through the remaining 12"! Be aware though: they are HEAVY! Especially when they are holding several kilo's of clay! I was sweating after ten minutes - which fortunately is all it took to finish the hole. So in summary, seem REALLY sturdy, easy and effective to use (but still require effort), recommended. PS: you have to build these by installing two bolts ... the included pressed spanners are junk; they bent immediately; no problem if you have a couple of spanners (14 and 15mm I seem to recall).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultimate post digger I bought this item after reading many glowing reviews and so pleased I did. In conjunction with the Auger I bought from Screwfix this made light work of an otherwise tiring task. Easily fits in hole as has two sets of hinges and works in the opposite way to a traditional post digger as you pull apart to open and push together to grab the dirt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just unlucky Don’t get me wrong this item is great. Just the right amount of weight to really be able to get through some solid lumps of earth. Built to a high standard. My problem was that my purchase must have been put together then taken apart again. Needed a hammer and chisel as well as a socket set to put it together. So needless to say it looked a bit beaten up by the time I’d put it together. Why didn’t I take it back I hear you say? Because I needed it ASAP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over 2 ft deep, you MUST use! The extra set of hinges make ALL the difference, especially when going further down than 2 ft. Normal ones (with one pivot) will fail to work at a depth over 1.5 ft, 2ft at best as the handles hit the sides of the holes when you pull them apart (so compress and grab the soil). This means you end up making conical holes which 1. eat up loads of cement and 2. utterly fail to mechanically hold the post in the ground. The item 50215 works differently by closing the jaws when you push the handles *together*. In this way you can extract at great depth without having to make conical holes. Today, using these with item (62496) , I got 4 perfectly straight holes into the ground in about 4 hours, each hole talking about 1.2 bags of postcrete. 12ft of soil removed! This did include levelling etc. So utterly stoked to have arrived at a more functional process with good tools, that I had to rave about it. Tip- Do not be tempted to tolerate stones peeping out on the side walls. It is easier to not dig them out, yes, ...but they will inevitably catch the spade edges or bolts on the way down and cause you to lose momentum. Very frustrating. Better to cut them out and make a wider (but still parallel sided) hole that you can empty at speed. Also, pulling the handles as far apart as you can on the way into the hole will mean you arrive at the bottom with the jaws wide open, so grabbing maximum soil.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Purpose built tool I gave a lot of thought to this before buying because I usually dig post holes with a bar and shovel. I've no regrets! Digs a neat hole deeper than i could get my arm down to. Money well spent, holes dug in half the time and saves on concrete. Also a very robust tough tool. The weight of the tool is an advantage helping to break the ground as you drop it in the hole. Removes a good amount of soil with each grab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement This was purchased to replace a broken post hole digger. A very well constructed device which helped us dig holes four feet deep to extract canal mile posts. The unique pivot allowed us to dig a deep hole with hitting the side. We will be buying more of these for other team members.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't fault these! Decided to spend time to write another review, as I feel I really came across product that's worth it. Looking at the product from all rating perspectives: -Giving 5-star on performance was the hardest part. IF, and that is "ONLY if" I wrote this review straight after purchase, I'd give performance 3 or 4 stars. This digger really is hard to operate, but ONLY TO START WITH. When using this digger the first day I thought this is going to be a pain... Really hard to open and close, feels really heavy. However, after say 15-ish post holes (I dug to various depths, up to 1 meter deep), suddenly all parts started fitting together!! It's like running-in car engine, the friction does the job for you, and after a while it's absolutely smooth operation! -Features at 5 stars, as I can simply dig a 1 meter deep hole, same diameter all the way to the bottom. The extra hinge is an excellent design. Also, what I initially thought was going to be a downside, the extra weight of the digger can be used to users advantage to dig deeper with less effort, allowing gravity to do some work! -Value definitely at 5 stars. I quite often modify my tools, or I look at how much would it cost me in plain materials to make a similar functioning tool, and I can't see how could I beat the price... It's probably THE most expensive manual digger, definitely most expensive I found so far, however, worth every penny. And when digging with this tool the extra hinge (straight hole) allows saving quite a lot on materials cost. I'm using just about a bag (or 25 kg) of concrete for each post with this digger. -Reliability also 5 stars. My justification behind the score is simple: it takes approx 15 post holes to get over initial hinges "running-in", and after that the digger only STARTS it's normal operation. It feels as if's going to take another 100 posts done (or more), before I'll have to even re-tighten the bolts! So far I used this manual digger on two projects, used it for several hours in total, and I simply cannot fault it. Yes, it's heavy, and you will get blisters using this digger, but it's definitely extremely sturdy construction, designed to outlast any other manual post hole digger I ever used. In short, compared to other diggers, it feels like industrial tool among DIY toys!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from In case you can't decide... Having to dig some post holes, I ordered this and the cheaper model with fibreglass handles as I was not sure if the other product (35835) would be up to the job. Neither product will actually DIG the hole, you'll need 62496 (a strong breaking bar type too) for that. As for clearing the soil out the hole, I suppose either this or 35835 would work equally well. But I found the cheaper item worked fine. So I am not dismissing this product at all (and it is indeed very well made) but just wanted to say that the cheaper one works as well, at least in my experience.
