McAlpine Stemball Sink Strainer Waste is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sink strainer I bought this to replace the strainer waste which was fitted with the original sink. This is a better quality than the original and it only took moments to fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from stem ball sink drainer A bit pricey, but it does have that reassurance of quality you get with a McAlpine product.(used quite a few now, and never a problem). Quality ball bearing strainer which works as a plug when pushed down, and stays up to strain and drain when up. Unlike cheaper models. Plastic base and stainless steel centre not chrome on brass. The provided foam seal is rubbish, so throw it away and use plumbers mate. The rubber base seal is good. The flange measures 112mm approx dia, so ideal for a standard 90mm 1/2 bowl replacement. (I used it to replace a leaky waste disposal unit). Fitting a quality component saves time, money and reputation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor performance and Quality I had one of these professionally fitted to a new kitchen sink and it leaks like a sieve. Yes it catches waste but it does not hold water - even when the drain underneath is pristine ie no waste trapped under the seal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from McAlpine SS Strainer Waste Only fitted a few days ago however this appears to be well made and has a positive action. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS STAINLESS STEEL AND NOT CHROME ON BRASS AS IS DESCRIBED IN THE CATALOGUE AND ON LINE.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable Does what it's supposed to do seals and drains Easy to fit

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good replacement Yes it is a good replacement for one that had broken. As previously mentioned the seals are pretty much a waste of time. I put them to one side (never know when they might come in handy!) and used Plumbers Gold - it's a product I have used on several plumbing/sealing occasions and it works well. Just be aware that the top lip is relatively deep and the top recess in some sinks is shallow - hence it might protrude a little - it does on ours. Not a major problem but the last dregs of the sink water do not drain away. I guess the lip could be shaved to lower it. All in all a happy chappy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality and effective Whilst fitting a new kitchen sink tap I leaned very gently on the waste plumbing and the old waste disintegrated leaving a large and ugly hole. Oops! I was pleased to find this item which is better than the original and looks really neat. The "stem ball" is a good feature. You can place the plug gently in place and it stands a few mm proud and acts as a sieve. If you push it firmly into place, it acts as a plug. I checked for instructions in the box but there were none. Only after fitting did I find the instructions on the side of the box. Check these as the order of assembly matters (I got it wrong to start with). The underside of my sink is rough fibreglass so difficult to seal to. I've had to use some jointing compound but I think that will work. That's not a criticism of this product, just some advice. Apart from that, it was easy to fit. I'm a mediocre DIY'er at best. Service at my local branch was also very good - well done.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor Gaskets Hardware was good quality, but let down by the seals provided. The foam one was simply not fit for purpose, as has been mentioned in another review, and the rubber ring was about 2mm too large in diameter to fit in the recess in the body of the unit, No amount of chasing the Lochness Monster hump would make it stay in place long enough to assemble the waste, in the end I ground down the outside diameter to make it fit, and used a bed of silicone rubber to replace the foam gasket. All in all, disappointing.
